Orin G. Murfin was captain of the USS West Virginia from June 26, 1928 to June 15, 1929.  He served as Navy Judge Advocate General from 1931-1934 and Commander-in-Chief of the Asiatic Fleet from 1935-1936.  In 1937 as Commandant of the 14th Naval District, he headed the search for Amelia Earhart.  In retirement he served as president of the Navy Court of Inquiry following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
