Joe enlisted in the Navy on June 18, 1924, and spent most of his career on the BB-48 leading up to the attack. He retired from the Navy on January 7, 1947 after serving over 22-1/2 years in the Navy. I have his Record of Naval Service discharge paper. I also have the watch he was wearing mounted in a shadow box in my home. It stopped at 25 after the hour, the time he felt he dove overboard into the water. I'm told the burning oil on the water burned most of his hair off that day. He was a cook and retired as a Chief Commissary Steward
