Finley Dittmar
Enlisted

USN
USS West Virginia
1938-1941

My father-in-law, Finley Dittmar, served on the West Virginia from around 1938 to 1941. He was a powder loader in gun turret 4. For awhile he worked in the ship soda fountain and got to know quite a few of the crew. He enlisted out of high school in 1936 and received an early discharge in California in 1941 so the Navy would not have to send him back to the States in two months. The West Virginia then proceeded to Pearl Harbor. The rest is history. Shortly after Pearl Harbor he reenlisted.

Finley died in 1990 but he always loved the West Virginia.
